As winter sets in, the District of Kitimat is reminding residents about important parking and snow clearing rules. From now until March 31, street parking is prohibited between 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. to allow for snow removal, and vehicles in the way may be towed. Property owners are also reminded that trailers, RVs, and boats must be parked at least 4.5 meters from the property line and 1.8 meters apart. Improper storage could result in a $100 per day fine. Additionally, placing snow from your property onto roads or neighboring areas is illegal and can cause flooding hazards.
In Terrace, snow removal routes are in effect from November 15 to April 1, with parking banned on all streets, alleys, and highways. Vehicles that block snow removal operations may also be towed. It is illegal to deposit snow from private properties onto city streets, which can hinder plowing efforts and create traffic problems.
Seniors and those with physical disabilities in Terrace can apply for financial assistance for snow removal through a rebate program. (find link here) Eligible applicants can receive up to 50% reimbursement of snow clearing costs, up to $250 per winter.
Residents are also urged to keep refuse carts off sidewalks to avoid blocking the plowing machines and ensure safe passage for pedestrians. For more details, contact your local public works department.
