A health alert has been issued for Prince Rupert following a significant increase in overdoses linked to drugs sold as “down.” These overdoses are occurring primarily during smoking, with many individuals requiring multiple doses of naloxone for reversal.
Authorities are urging the community to take precautions. They recommend seeking overdose prevention and response training and carrying naloxone at all times. It is advised not to use drugs alone, and if individuals choose to do so, they should use safety apps like Lifeguard or BeSafe, or call the National Overdose Response Service for assistance.
Knowing personal tolerance levels is crucial, especially for those who are sick or have recently reduced their drug use. The public is also advised to avoid mixing drugs or combining them with alcohol and to start with small amounts. Utilizing Overdose Prevention Sites and getting drugs checked for safety are encouraged. In the event of an overdose, calling emergency services immediately is vital.
Local support services are available in Prince Rupert, including the Specialized Mental Health and Substance Use Outreach, which operates daily from 8:30 AM to 7 PM. Drug checking services are also available in nearby Terrace on select days. Harm reduction supplies, including naloxone kits, can be obtained from the Prince Rupert Health Unit during business hours.
The alert is set to expire on November 13, 2024. Residents are urged to stay informed and prioritize safety.
