Ottawa is providing $3.6 million to help the Kitselas First Nation harness the massive reserves of geothermal energy beneath its territory.
Geothermal is a clean and renewable energy source produced by capturing and utilizing the heat contained below the earth’s surface.
BC’s coast is a primary source for geothermal energy, with the abundance of valcanoes in the area forming the Pacific Ocean’s Ring of Fire.
Kitselas Geothermal is attempting to harness the area’s potential to produce clean energy through their Fuel for Reconciliation project.
Located at the M’Deek Reservoir, the project will take a multi-phase approach, with the first aiming to provide industrial scale heating.
In its first phase, the project is expected to replace 270,000 gigajoules of natural gas per year, reducing green house gas emissions by over 13,000 tonnes annually.
