It’s already the third worst wildfire season in the Province’s history, and with over 100 active wildfires, it may not be slowing down soon.
2018 holds the record for most hectares burned in a single year at 1.3 million, but this year has already seen over 1 million hectares burned.
In a stark contrast to the norm, the majority of wildfire starts in BC this season have been human-caused.
On the average year, lightning prompts roughly 60 percent of wildfires, and with the heat picking up, the lightning season is just beginning.
Of the 105 active wildfires in the province, 70 are located within the Prince George Fire Centre, including one larger than the province of PEI.
That blaze, the Donnie Creek fire, is covering 571,000 hectares in the Tommy Lakes area of the North Peace, and is prompting an evacuation alert.
A 43,000 hectare blaze in the Omineca Provincial Park is prompting an evacuation order, with residents directed to head to Vanderhoof.
Evacuation orders also remain in place for the 33,000 hectare Ittsi Creek fire at the border, south of Fort Liard.
