Five companies are being honoured by the Prince Rupert Port Authority for their commitment to reducing the port’s environmental impacts.
It’s the tenth year of the Authority’s Green Wave Program, which incentivizes shippers for voluntarily investing in sustainable practices.
Under the program, commercial vessels are granted savings on their harbour dues based on their air emissions and underwater noise performance.
Each year, the PRPA honours a number of companies who stood out above the rest with Green Wave Awards.
This year’s recipients include: COSCO Shipping Lines, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, SM Line, Navigator Gas LLC, and BC Ferries.
They’re also recognizing the efforts of two ships: the PIAVIA and NBA Rubens, for employing technology to reduce the underwater noise they create.
In total, 208 vessels qualified for the program in 2022, with 42 meeting Green Wave standard under the RightShip GHG Rating system.
2022 also saw the PRPA add an incentive for vessels shutting down and plugging into shoreline power at the Fairview Container Terminal.
In total, the programs helped reduce emissions by roughly 4,785 tonnes in 2022.
