Recent announcements by neighbouring Nations have the Tahltan Central Government re-asserting their territorial boundaries.
Last month, the Taku River Tlingit First Nation announced the T’aku Tlatsini Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area.
That declaration seeks to protect the 1.8 million hectare Taku Watershed, the largest in the Northwest inaccessible by roads.
But, the area declared by the Nation includes the Sheslay area, which the TCG says lies within their territory.
According to the TCG, the consent of the Tahltan Nation was not obtained nor sought prior to the creation of the IPCA.
They say they oppose this type of unilateral assertion of governance rights over Tahltan territory, and are working to protect their territory from encroachment by third parties.
But they also say they wish to maintain positive relationships with neighbouring Nations, and are looking to engage in respectful dialogue to ensure their lands are safeguarded.
