A sentencing decision made by the BC Courts is being lambasted as egregious and offensive by the National Police Federation.
That decision came down last week, stemming from a violent assault on a Prince George RCMP officer last August.
Said officer, a woman in her mid-20s, had been pursuing a suspect following a retail theft at the time of the incident.
During the chase, the suspect hid between two cars in a parking lot, before jumping the officer and striking her several times in the head.
Despite that, the officer was able to make the arrest, but her injuries have prevented her from being able to return to work since.
Last week, the man was sentenced to probation with no substantial conditions, following a plea deal in which he received credit for time served due to other crimes.
According to the Federation, the decision makes a travesty of officer protections, and is a further example of BC’s lax prosecution of repeat offenders.
