A new monument along the Highway of Tears in Prince George will honour and commemorate missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2 spirit people.
Dubbed “The Journey of Hope”, the monument features a red dress with the shadowed silhouette of an Indigenous dancer in the middle.
Located where the Highway meets Ferry Avenue, the monument was unveiled on Sunday in front of a crowd of supporters and family members.
Undertaken by the Prince George Red Dress Society, with the permission of the Lheidli T’enneh, the monument is just one piece of their annual Red Dress Campaign.
Red Dresses have been a symbol of the MMIWG movement since 2010, when Métis artist Jaime Black began hanging them to garner awareness for the cause.
