The Town of Smithers has secured $417,000 from the BC Ministry of Transportation and Transit through the Active Transportation Infrastructure Grant program. This funding will support the creation of a new multi-use pathway along Main Street, connecting Highway 16 to 10th Avenue and linking up with the existing Fulton Avenue pathway.
Once completed, this new route, along with the Fulton Avenue pathway and the upcoming Cycle16 Connector, will offer a safe active transportation route from the Bulkley River Bridge to downtown Smithers. Construction is slated to begin this summer, coinciding with the Princess Street reconstruction project, which will also include a new multi-use pathway.
The town is currently tendering the project, and while exact timelines are still being finalized, the Princess Street project will be fully funded by the $2.7 million allocated by the Northwest BC Resource Benefits Alliance. This consolidated funding approach ensures the entire project is completed in one phase.
