British Columbia will eliminate its consumer carbon tax beginning April 1, 2025, following the federal government’s decision to remove its own.
The provincial government plans to introduce legislation on March 31 to officially end the tax, instructing fuel sellers and natural gas retailers to stop charging it by April 1.
This move will bring immediate savings to consumers, as the scheduled tax increase has also been canceled.
While the tax is being removed at the consumer level, the province remains committed to climate action, focusing on affordable and sustainable solutions.
B.C. will continue its output-based carbon pricing system for large industrial emitters, ensuring they contribute fairly while encouraging innovation and the adoption of lower-carbon technologies.
