Yesterday the Haida Nation and Canada announced a groundbreaking agreement recognizing Haida Aboriginal title on Haida Gwaii. The Chiix̲uujin / Chaaw K̲aawgaa “Big Tide (Low Water)” Haida Title Lands Agreement marks a significant milestone in reconciliation. This recognition extends to the foreshore and low-water mark, without affecting private property or local government interests. It also ensures continued federal services on the islands. The Haida Nation, which holds inherent title, voted overwhelmingly in favor of the agreement in November 2024, and it was officially signed by both parties in December 2024. Over the next five years, the Haida Nation and Canada will collaborate on transition and governance matters, maintaining stability for all island residents. The agreement builds on earlier reconciliation efforts, including the 2024 “Rising Tide” Haida Title Lands Agreement with British Columbia. This is a significant step towards healing and a new future for Haida Gwaii.
