Recently, a consultant criticized Terrace for being a badly planned city. Perhaps that’s true, but it’s still a pretty good place to live.
The latest “Most Livable Cities in Canada” report by The Globe and Mail ranked the top 100 best places to live, and Terrace came in 41st overall. It ranked 18th among the best cities in B.C.
The rankings placed Terrace as the most livable city in northern B.C., ahead of Prince George, which came in 64th, and Prince Rupert, which placed a dismal 223rd.
MP Taylor Bachrach says Terrace’s municipal government must be doing something right, as the city gained 107 spots from last year’s ranking.
Mayor Sean Bujtas attributes the city’s jump to its location and amenities. Nestled among mountains with incredible rivers and lakes, Terrace attracts outdoor enthusiasts. After enjoying a hike or bike ride, they can enjoy a meal at one of the city’s fine restaurants and stay in one of several comfortable hotels or motels.
Both the mayor and the MP agree that the city could always improve. Bujtas mentions that the downtown revitalization project will help spruce up the city further, with the goal of encouraging more use of the downtown core.
They also believe that this type of national ranking could have a positive effect on people considering relocating.
The rankings were based on 50 variables across ten categories: economy, housing, demographics, healthcare, safety, education, social engagement, amenities, transportation, and climate.
As for the top three most livable cities in Canada, the rankings put North Vancouver at number one, followed by West Vancouver and Victoria. Other cities that made the list include Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, and Calgary.
