Highway 37, connecting Terrace and Kitimat, has seen a troubling increase in fatal vehicle accidents, prompting renewed calls for safety improvements.
Last month, a tragic incident occurred when a vehicle hydroplaned, overturned, and landed in a body of water, resulting in two fatalities.
Just two weeks earlier, a head-on collision claimed the lives of a mother and her two children.
These incidents are part of a concerning history of fatal crashes on this highway.
Former Kitimat Mayor Joanne Monaghan began advocating for improved highway safety in 2009, and while the Department of Highways implemented some measures, Monaghan’s efforts never ceased.
Now, the fight for safer road conditions has been reignited.
Since 2019, there have been 94 crashes, including fatalities, on Highway 37.
In response, the family of one of November’s victims has launched a petition urging the government to take action.
The petition calls for measures such as installing more barriers, guardrails, and other safety features at critical locations to reduce highway fatalities.
Residents are encouraged to support the initiative by signing the petition at Change.org.
