Today, on Good Medicine with Helen Knott…
We explore the journey of healing from trauma and learning to grow as a Matriarch.
In this conversation, Helen discusses the meaning of being a matriarch in Indigenous culture and her personal journey in understanding and embracing this role. She shares the importance of uplifting and celebrating Indigenous women, and the challenges of vulnerability and fighting negative thoughts, as well as her own practices for healing and creating healthy boundaries.
We explore somatic healing and the physical release of emotions, and Helen shares her personal journey of healing and self-discovery. We explore themes of anger, self-compassion, clearing space for future generations, navigating change, embracing our bodies, taking up space, and the power of laughter… as good medicine.
Today we learn that:
- Being a matriarch in Indigenous culture involves understanding and embracing the role of a strong woman within the family and community.
- Indigenous women have a unique strength and resilience, and their leadership is characterized by both fierceness and joy.
- Sharing personal stories and experiences can create space for healing and empowerment, and it is important to hold space for others without being consumed by their trauma, or our own
We discussed how:
- Practices such as creating mantras, releasing shame, and engaging in somatic healing can help in fighting negativity and evil thoughts. Anger is an important emotion that needs to be acknowledged and expressed as part of the healing journey.
- Breathing and self-compassion are essential tools for healing and self-discovery.
- Becoming a matriarch involves clearing space for future generations and embracing the role with gratitude and purpose.
- Change can be challenging, but finding balance, discernment, and validation in the journey is key.
And we concluded that:
- Embracing and celebrating our bodies is a powerful act of self-love and acceptance.
- Taking up space and trusting the path is important for Indigenous women to reclaim their power and make their voices heard.
- Laughter is a form of good medicine that brings joy and healing to our lives.
Remember Helen’s words:
“ A song will travel the world until someone is ready to hear it, and who are you to deny this calling.”
