For the first time in over three decades, the Metlakatla First Nation has elected a new Chief Councillor.
Robert Nelson will replace out-going Chief Councillor Harold Leighton, who opted not to run for the spot in last Friday’s election.
Leighton, who was appointed to the Order of BC earlier this year, had served 36 years in the role, before opting not to run for re-election.
Nelson beat out Randall Cobb, Braden Etzertza, Darci Nelson, and Prince Rupert Councillor Reid Skelton-Morven for the top spot on Council.
Alvin W Leask, Erika Leighton, and Sharon L Morven will join him as on-reserve councillors, while Alrita Leask, Miranda Leighton, and Charlene McLean will fill the off-reserve positions.
