Legislation has been passed recognizing and supporting the Council of the Haida Nation’s rights to governance.
Formed in 1974 as a governing body, the Council is now recognized as such in provincial law under the Haida Nation Recognition Act.
Authorized by the constitution of the Haida Nation, the council has been mandated to conduct the external affairs of the nation and steward the lands and waters of Haida Gwaii.
Gaagwiis Jason Alsop says that part of the barrier to reconciliation for them has been a lack of formal recognition of their title and rights in Haida Gwaii.
Although this legislation is just one step in the GayGahlda or “Changing Tide” Framework designed to further negotiate agreements eventually leading to full Crown recognition.
