A new committee for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation will see Chief Cadmus Delorme oversee discussions and decisions surrounding residential school related documents.
In December of 2021, Minister Marc Miller of Crown-Indigenous Relations instructed the establishment of a Residential School Documents Advisory Committee.
Today, Executive Director of the NCTR Stephanie Scott announced that Chief Cadmus Delorme of Cowessess First Nation has been appointed as chairperson.
That committee will consist of residential school survivors, First Nations, Inuit and Metis community members, and federal representatives.
Together, they will work to develop a consistent approach to identifying, reviewing, and sharing documents with information related to residential schools.
While developing a standard approach, the committee will reccomend how to remove barriers to residential school information, while respecting survivors wishes and government regulations.
“There can be no reconciliation without first uncovering the truth and sharing relevant documents will help us do this in partnership with First nations, Inuit, and Metis Survivors families and communities” Minister Marc Miller said of the committee.
To date the NCTR has recieved 1.5 million additional documents and images, 12 previously unshared or updated narratives, and a full document collection from the Sisters of St. Ann.
