Control over 20,000 hectares of their traditional territory has been transferred back to the Lake Babine Nation.
That land includes both waterfront and prime forestry lands, and will allow the Nation to expand their forestry business, and create economic opportunities.
By agreeing to transfer the land back as fee simple ownership, the Province is fulfilling a portion of their Foundation Agreement with the Nation.
Signed by both Canada and BC in 2020, that agreement establishes a roadmap for reconciliation with the Nation.
It provides a step-by-step guide for collaboration on a phased approach to implementing Lake Babine self-governance and title rights.
