A US Army boat which sank in the Grenville Channel, north of Hartley Bay, nearly 80 years ago has begun to leak oil once more.
In 1946, the MG Zalinski ran aground and sank in the channel while en route to Alaska, though its location remained a mystery until 2003.
Ten years after its discovery, the Coast Guard teamed up with the Gitga’at and Gtixaala First Nations to remove 44,000 Litres of oil, and over 300,000 Litres of oily water, from the wreck.
But, some oil and fuel remained inaccessible, resulting in more minor leaks popping up from time to time.
After noticing oil in the water recently, the Coast Guard dispatched a crew to the wreckage last week, and discovered three small, but steady leaks.
An Emergency Coordination Centre has been set up, as the Coast Guard works with the Gitga’at and Gitxaala Nations to address the new leak.
