New Premier, and former Housing Minister, David Eby has proposed his plan to increase housing availability in BC.
Part of that plan is the newly introduced Housing Supply Act, which would allow the provinces to set housing targets in municipalities with the greatest need.
Housing targets would be based on consultations with municipalities, and would encourage them to address local construction challenges.
If passed, the Act would take effect mid next year, with local governments required to produce housing needs reports, and provincial assistance on fast-tracking approvals continuing.
In addition, Eby is proposing immediate changes to the Strata Property Act, to end strata rental-restriction bylaws and limit age-restriction bylaws.
Under that amendment, only the 55+ age restriction would remain, in order to preserve seniors’ housing.
Other rules, such as those banning families with children, and those preventing strata owners from renting, will be eliminated completely.
